Introduction Nchanga North General Hospital (NNGH) is located in the mining town of Chingola. Chingola is located in the Copperbelt province of Zambia, approximately 411km North of Lusaka. It is reknown for having one of the largest open pit copper mines in the world. Chingola covers an area of about 1676 square km and has a population of approximately 180,000 of whom 60% live in urban areas. The road communication is dependable with three major exits to Kitwe, Chililabombwe and Solwezi. Like most other towns and cities in the area there are regular coach services to the town and regular bus services to the hospital.

About the Hospital Nchanga North General Hospital is one of the two Hospitals in Chingola but the only governement hospital in the town. The other, Nchanga South Mine Hospital is run privately run by Konkola Copper Mines Limited. Like Nchanga South, NNGH was run by the mines but it was officially handed over to the government in 2000. It has around 293 beds and 84 baby cots. Like most other government hospitals, it provides mostly acute but also elective medical and surgical services. It has about 350 staff, mostly Nurses with around 20 doctors and has about 5500 admissions a year.
